WHAT A SEASON
Well now that this season is almost behind us we look back and wonder how did we survive. I know these post are far and few between but that’s how it is when the season starts. Feels like the snow ball effect that doesn’t stop. You just go numb and go through the motions. We started off almost not starting at all. The heating system in the greenhouse nearly did not happen. This is why its important to get multiple quotes and use a well known company and not some shoe maker. Once we were rolling and things looked good and plants were healthy and potted up we were excited. This was our big year. Mother nature had other ideas. Last minute snow storms was almost a nail in the coffin. Our plots were flooded out during the spring thaw and they never drained properly. The constant raining destroyed huge sections. We had to move our entire operation out to our pasture which was higher ground. Till and prep all that up. We had planted the proper amounts for our old plots. Now it was like starting over. New plots , new sizes and no idea. We had to re work our watering system as well. It was delays after delays. Then finally we got planting but then it rained and rained. It was pure muck. Rotted out a lot of plants. The loss was staggering. We managed to save some items and with shear luck some of our main items was on higher grounds. There were times where we thought this would be a total write off. We pushed through. Made our CSA work and supplied our farmers market. Other opportunities that presented themselves had to be shelved. With the amounts we lost we just could not move forward with it. Next year should be better. All we can do is hope for a more dryer season. In the end farming is not all sunshine and pretty pictures of product. Its heart ache, loss and struggles as well. I guess if we never go through the hard times we wont know what to do when it shows up again. Always grateful for learning all sides of farming. Take care everyone!
